Daily Devotion

daily verse: Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself (Matthew 6:34).

DAILY DEVOTION, January 25, 2022

Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith. He was even called the friend of God. (James 2:23).

How do we become a friend of God? Do we roll up our sleeves and work as hard as we can, and perhaps if we do enough, He will consider us His friend? No, we cannot be good enough to earn God’s friendship. Abraham became a friend of God. How did that happen? He simply believed in God. He trusted God. He had faith in God. But still, he was an imperfect man. He messed up on God’s promise to give him a son, among other character flaws. But God “counted” him as righteous. God spoke to an unrighteous man and said, “I consider you to be my righteous friend because you trust in Me.”

That is also the same way it works for us. We cannot possibly earn God’s favor. But, under the New Covenant, He considers us righteous when we trust in His Son. Like Abraham, we become His friend. God offers us His hand of friendship on one condition – – – that we trust in His Son. And so we sing, “What a friend we have in Jesus.”

Father, like Abraham, I am a flawed human being. I have failed You more times than I can count. What a blessing it is to know that when I placed my faith in Jesus, all my sins were forgiven and you now call me “friend.” Human friends may disappoint us, but You are a Friend who will never fail us. May Your name and the name of Jesus be praised forever, Amen.
