"I was glad when they said…let us go into the house of the Lord." Psalm 122:1
Marie’s daily verse: 1 Peter 1:15-16 (NIV)But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”Daily Devotion, March 30, 2021Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God (Romans 13:1).Paul tells us to submit to those in authority over us, also reminding us that God is the ultimate authority. God has appointed all lesser authorities. Human government is God’s plan for creating order in the nations. We are to be loyal citizens, respecting those who govern over us. If we disobey government authorities, we are rebelling against God.Of course, governing authorities often stray from the will of God. In that case, we are to obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29). God has decreed human governments, but often, those who rule over us disregard the will of God. When government usurps God’s role and makes laws contrary to the Law of God, we are to obey God. However, Romans 13:1 is clear that we are to obey the government in all things that do not violate Scripture. We are also commanded to pray for those who are in authority (1 Timothy 2:1-2). We should pray that our government leaders will govern under God’s control. Our government was founded by those who recognized the ultimate authority of God. Pray that it will continue.Father, I do pray for those who rule over us in the government. Bless them when they act in harmony with Your will. Restrain them when they act in violation of Your will. Help those who rule to remember that their authority comes from You. I pray in that name which is above every name, Jesus our Lord, Amen.
