Marie’s daily verse: “Let your unfailing love surround us, LORD, for our hope is in You alone. ” (Psalm 33:22).DAILY DEVOTION, May 26, 2022The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Fools despise wisdom and instruction. (Proverbs 1:7, DRA).The Book of Proverbs assumes that the readers have a relationship with God. We know that bond is established by trusting in Jesus as our Savior and Lord. Proverbs gives us much instruction about how to live as redeemed persons. Solomon begins his book of wisdom with the fear of God. I wonder how many of us believe verse 7? Solomon tells us that godly wisdom starts with a fear of God. Do you believe that? What do the words mean? Aren’t we to love God rather than fear Him? Are you afraid of God? You should be, for only through fear do we come to know the God who loves us.The Hebrew word used for fear (yirah) does not mean reverential awe as some like to explain vs. 7. It means to dread, to fear, to be frightened to death. Why is such fear the beginning of wisdom? Until we come to grips with what almighty God will do to the disobedient, we will not fear Him. A God who can cast you into hell is to be feared. Since we are all at different levels of disobedience, what is to become of us? Fear leads us to seek a way to reestablish a relationship with God. Enter Jesus, who reveals to us the forgiving love of God, available to all who trust on Him. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Jesus puts our fear to rest as we trust Him. But who would take Jesus seriously unless he first feared the Lord?Father, Your power is awesome. I do fear what You will do to me as a sinner. However, I have learned about the love of Jesus and His great sacrifice for me. I thank You that I have moved from fear to love because of Him, In His name, Amen.
