Marie’s daily verse: Philippines 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, Rejoice!
DAILY DEVOTION, December 18, 2022
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you (Matthew 5:11-12).
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if faith in Jesus resulted in a pain-free life of ease? There are those who tell us that following Jesus will result in a blessed earthly life. In the Sermon on the Mount, we learn that trusting in Jesus may lead to trouble. Many Christians are insulted and persecuted. That hurts. None of us like to be insulted and hated by others. God’s prophets were persecuted in the past. The more faithful we are to Jesus, the more likely we are to face persecution.
Then comes the good news. We are to rejoice when we are subjected to abuse because of our faith. Those who stand fast and refuse to compromise their faith will be rewarded in heaven. The reward is described as “great.”
This raises a question. Am I more interested in this life or in the life to come? Do I really believe that faith in Jesus leads to a glorious future? If I do, I will be faithful to Him, whatever the cost.
Father, I want to be faithful to Jesus even if it leads to pain. Help me to keep my focus on eternity. In Jesus name, Amen.
