Marie’s daily verse: Hebrews 12:14Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.

DAILY DEVOTION, January 18, 2023

The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years . . . it is soon cut off, and we fly away” (Psalm 90:10).

God is very kind to tell us how many years we have to expect. Seventy to eighty years is about what we can anticipate. Hum, since I am in my 80’s, I guess I am on a short leash! I am thankful to be functional (if limited!) at my age. As we oldies often say, “where have the years gone?” It does seem like only yesterday I was in high school. I still remember our fight song from high school in Minneapolis. “Cheer for the orange and blue, waving forever…” Well, I won’t bore you with the rest.

I suspect the hymn “I’ll Fly Away” is based on this verse. Those who trust in Jesus will fly away to a much better home in heaven. Death is not to be feared. Yes, this life is all we have known, and we wonder what heaven will be like. We don’t know the details, but it will be wonderful beyond our ability to comprehend now. The greatest blessing will be to be with Jesus. It is all because of Him that we expect to arrive safely in heaven. One of these days, you will fly away. Be prepared!

Father, how thankful I am for Jesus. I would have no hope were it not for Him. Keep me in true faith until I arrive safely in my heavenly home. In the blessed name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.
