Above all, take the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked (Ephesians 6:16 KJV).

“Above all” means that faith is our primary defense against the work of Satan. Using a figure of speech, Paul thinks of Satan as shooting darts at us. Faith is our primary defense.  Whenever we are without faith, we are vulnerable. Satan’s temptations are very powerful. If we try to resist in our own strength, we will most certainly fail. Satan is much stronger than we are. As we resist his temptations by faith, he cannot touch us. Never face a day without faith. Don’t allow any of Satan’s darts to pierce your soul. Keep that shield up. As Paul said elsewhere, “The just shall live by faith.” If Satan causes you to fall, repent quickly and renew your faith in Jesus Christ. Someone said, “If Satan comes knocking at your door, let Jesus answer.” Let the devil know that Jesus is the Lord of your life. Once Satan realizes that you are a person of faith, he will leave you alone and search for a more vulnerable target.

Father, help me to live by faith. Then, when temptations come, help me to respond with faith. I don’t want to yield to temptations. I want to quench them with the shield of faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
